Either of the partners infected with a sexually transmitted disease (STD) can pass on the infection to the baby in the womb. It is highly important to get screened before and during the pregnancy for any STDs especially if the mother has had a history of STD before pregnancy, or had multiple sex partners. Even though a mother has the right to deny the screening for any STDs, it is in the best interest for her and her baby to get screened.
STDs can result into multiple development issues for the fetus. Infections like HIV can be passed to the infant perinatally.
Women having sex during pregnancy should make sure that the male partner uses condoms. Even though HIV cannot be completely prevented by just the use of condoms, it has been found that condoms can mitigate the risk for many other STDs.
