The role of a male in reproduction is to produce sperms and transfer them into the females body. The male reproductive system consists of:
- Testicles
- Vas deference
- Seminal vesicle
- Urethra
- Penis
Just like the ovaries produce eggs in the females, the testicles in males produce sperms – the male gametes. The sperms get stored in the epididymis which delivers them to the seminal vesicle through a tube called vas deference, that connects the epididymis and the seminal vesicle. The viscous fluid produced by the seminal vesicle is called semen, which along with the sperms, is ejaculated through the penis.
The testicles are stored in a sac like structure called the scrotum. The scrotum keeps the testicles out of the main body to protect them from the excess heat from the body. The shaft of the penis becomes erect upon stimulation due to the filling up with blood. The penis delivers the semen into the vaginal tract of the female. Upon ejaculations, the sperms race towards the uterus and then towards the fallopian tubes in order to fertilize an egg. Once an egg is fertilized, its walls become harder and cannot be penetrated by another sperm.
