You are a one smart woman if you have a plan for pregnancy! As a matter of fact, planning ahead can mitigate risks that may arise during pregnancy. Planning would help you to have done everything that you should do to bring home a healthy baby (or babies) and enjoy the life ever after!

You might ask, would all this planning guarantee a hundred percent healthy baby – well, the answer is no. But you would feel more satisfied to know that you did your best!

Prepare mentally:If you want to be a mother, make sure you really want to be one. Having a baby is full time responsibility that needs tons of patience and love from both the mom and the father. You might soon find though that the love, pleasure and fun that you get back from the baby is priceless!

Both the mom and dad should have a similar mindset and agree to having a baby. Giving birth just for the sake of giving birth is not recommended at all. The majority of the couples like to have babies, the few who don’t may find it good to discuss and have an understanding before proceeding for starting pregnancy.

See your doctors!: Even before getting pregnant? An ob-gyn can perform the necessary check ups and make sure your body is all well to support pregnancy and to give birth to a healthy child.

If you need any X-rays done for dental work or mamograms etc, you should get them done before getting pregnant. Exposure to X-rays is not recommended during pregnancy. These days the intensity of x-rays during any prescribed exposures is very small – still, it is good to get these tasks off of your plate before getting on with pregnancy!

Do not forget to let your ob-gyn know about all the prescribed and off the shelf medications that you might be taking. Some stuff is dangerous for pregnancy and the doctors may advise you to stop as much before you start with pregnancy as possible.

Stop smoking, drinking or drugs: Thats not as easy as I put it, but smoking, drinking alcohol or taking drugs is too harmful for babies – even after they are born. Having a baby can be a serious enough excuse for you to stop the use of abuse substances for ever!

Check your insurance: Call your insurance provider and understand what is covered for pregnancy and what is not. Most often, for all the visits you make to the ob-gyn during the whole of pregnancy, you are charged for only a one time copay.
